Post your goals if you've got 'em, gang! :D
Jan 1 2020 (or therabouts)
Weight: 153 lbs.
BMI: 27.1 (Overweight)
Chest: 40"
Waist: 34"
Hips: 38"
Thighs: 22"
End of Year Goals:
Weight: 130 lbs. (-23 lbs)
BMI: 23 (Healthy) -4.1
Chest: 40" (don't actually care)
Waist: 32" -2"
Hips: 38" (don't actually care)
Thighs: 22" (don't actually care)
Accomplishment goals:
Run 50 miles in competitions this year (a 5k/month and one half marathon)
Walk 50 miles a week for at least 50 weeks
Ride 100 miles a month for at least 10 months (this is a new one for me!)
My goals are more around the activities I want to do. I want to add more walking/hiking to my gym schedule. Lifting is fine but I also want to get outdoors more.
I have also been on a Vegan diet since the 31st. So far so good - I want to keep it up for at least four months and then assess. Early results are that I have noticed quicker recovery between sets and after workouts. :)

Traveling with Toni had me on a (mostly) vegetarian diet. I see no reason to change that. I'm thinking of limiting my meat to primarily white meat, no more than four times a week. So far so good. :)
Continue with Kyokushin
Drop weight from 230 down to 220
Continue targeted strength training
Continue regaining flexibility

Seedy is being cruel. He sent me a picture of the most amazing dish of corned beef hash, my favorite hangover cure after menudo. I whimpered while I ate my oatmeal.

First hike of the year, 35 mostly rainy and windy kilometers. Feels good to have made a start, though.

About the same as walking three miles in shoes that fit.

I thought that too.
Definite benefit in trying to shake off the cobwebs around this time of year.
I popped out and did 21 miles on the bike, furthest I've been in 70 days ! :Embarrass:
Am certainly feeling better for having done it, rather than me staying at home and whinging about the poor weather. :bowler:
I finally ponied up and replaced my worn out running shoes, and I've rejoined the gym at work until the weather gets better.
After three weeks of feeling like crap, I think I can ease back into walking/running. I also want to start adding some weights.
Question for the lifters: how do I know how much is enough? Also, at my age I'm not sure if many reps of a lighter weight is better than fewer reps at a higher one. I'm a lot stronger than most people expect, and unlike a lot of women, I do bulk up a bit when I lift.
Help?
Six miles in the am before work (yes, I still get to go to work). Felt good, as I was struggling this winter to keep up any sort of regular running. I know I need to grind some more before I find my groove again. Nicer weather (and empty streets) will make it easier.

Holy thread necromancy, batman. :D
Sasks, keep up the good work.
Knoww what you mean about struggling this Winter, I think I did barely 100 miles on the bike last month.
I need to find home cardio exercises for people with bad backs like me. I've gained half a kg in a week of confinement. I've been doing exercise but all the heavy cardio I can do without equipment (rope jumping, jumping jacks) ends up giving me back pain (I have an herniated disk).
I got word on Friday that we're likely going to be working remotely through the end of the year, possibly a bit longer. So, for at least the next 7-9 months, this is my new normal.
That means that I have to take control of my weight now before this gets totally out of hand. As it is, I've already gained 15 pounds since I got back from Europe.
A couple of days ago, a friend mentioned that he was doing the Jillian Michaels 30-day squat and planks challenge. I asked if he minded if I did it with him, and he said sure! Accountability buddies and all that. That was on Friday, so I'm on Day 3. First, owowowowowow! Second, I'm staying on it so far, but fuck. OW! But it really made me miss running, which is right out because of the pollen in the air right now. It's literally falling from the sky every day like snow, and I'm crazy allergic. If I try to run in this, I will have an asthma attack and now is really not the time to be playing with those kinds of things.
Instead, I bought a new Fitbit smart watch, and I'm going to try to get a decent number of miles in walking every day. Still not great, but I can do that with a mask on and not die, so you know, win. Because I'm me, I created a tracker for the 30-day challenge, and I've added steps, calories, and weight to it.
I hate strengthening exercises like planks and squats, but it's something that I can do for the most part at my desk, and I need to do something. I cannot gain more weight.

Like many Brits I expect to come out of lockdown fitter than ever, making the most of my government-mandated exercise. I've restarted C25K (on week 5), doing Zoom classes with my PT next-door neighbour and my wannabe PT friend, and I bought an indoor trampoline, which is a great fun workout when I can get the cat for it long enough.
Problem is at the moment I have a disproportionally ENORMOUS belly for the first time, to the extent I went for an ovarian cancer test, which was thankfully negative. Some combination of menopause, lockdown drinking and stress, no doubt. Hope it's not being less menopausal than I thought and actually being pregnant instead, because that would be awks!
Went out yesterday evening, mainly looking for useful shops to do late or post-rush shopping at.
Ended up doing about 20 mile around the local area on the bike, the most I've done during the lock-down, don't know I'm allowed to do any more?
I found a peach of a Tesco express 5 miles from here, in a large village with a big elderly population, so after 7pm the place was deserted. So if I need something in an emergency I cycle cross country to there and leave it as late as nearly 10 pm.
I've actually started doing exercise during lockdown, though cardio is a big problem. My flat is tiny and we can't go out. Hopefully we'll be able to bike in a few weeks.
Until then I'm using some ghetto TRX to work out muscle groups.

I vote stress. It's amazing how much that directly impacts your belly fat. At least, that's the excuse I'm using.
I've been dieting since the lockdown started. I worried that if I didn't make a conscious effort, I'd end up eating snacks all day watching TV.
It's going well - I lost 18 pounds over the last five weeks. Hoping to do the same again.

It takes about as much space as you need to do burpees.
I've found myself riding my bicycle more and more during corn teen and that's become a real treat. I've had stomach troubles (not too serious but miserable) that caused me to drop quite a bit of weight over the last 4 or 5 months, so riding more came fairly easily even though I haven't ridden much since doing the AIDS/Lifecycle in 2014 (amazing).
tapping out 2 and 3 hour rides and loving being out in the Florida boonies. It hasn't got too hot yet either, but it will shortly.

I should be doing more, but strictly abidding by the UK lockdown, one should go out for one exercise a day, and whilst no definitive time limit was set, the government minister did say an hour a day, so I'm going with that. :(

Good going.
My goals are to drop below 190 lbs, run a marathon in under 5 hours and a half-marathon in under 2 hours, and break 500 miles total for the year.
Weight is still stubbornly just above 190. I'm behind in my miles, but I should be able to catch up now that its stopped being so cold and rainy. My half marathon (the Marine Corp Marathon's Historic Half) was cancelled, but if you run a half on your own and submit the time, they'll count it and send you the swag.
This fall will be my third marathon in as many years, if it's not cancelled. I've made progress in improving my running pace, with my 10 mile runs coming in around 9 minutes a mile.
I really miss the gym and in particular being able to lift heaving things.
You don't need a gym to lift heavy things. Be creative!
Try lifting bags of rice, buckets of water, and small children.
Their parents might mind.
I've found bodyweight exercises to be effective in lieu of a gym. Particularly playing around with different kinds of pushups you can really make your upper body work.
I've been dieting for the last couple of months - I've lost 21 pounds so far.

Did a little over 300 miles on the bike last month, not brilliant but OK given I'm limited to the local places.
There's a bike trail about 20 minutes from my house- one of those converted former railway trails. It runs through woods and farms through old Florida, some creeks and wetland, through at least one town that gave up and disincorporated, past a team harvesting cauliflower. I took it to Palatka and back about 3 and a half hour round trip. Pretty quiet on a Tuesday, handful of riders and one rollerblader, oh and a snake. Good times.

Nice, finding the quiet admit the... , oh right the world has gone a bit quiet recently, hasn't it.
This is so frustrating. I just did a bunch of calculations, and by several different measures, my body fat is at 27.5%-28%. (I used several different methods, all of which put me in this range.)
I weight 166 pounds today, which is just shy of "obese" per the BMI. (COVID 15 is a real thing. :( ) At 28% body fat, that has me completely ignoring the BMI, which we all know is shit for most people anyway. That also means that my lean body mass is 119.5. A "healthy" weight with that lean body mass and 20% body fat puts me at 143.4 pounds. Okay, clear, achievable goal established. Yay!
Look around some more to see what "healthy" is for someone at my height (5'2.5") and stature (large frame/muscular), and if I weigh 143.4, I'm still overweight by the BMI but for my frame kind of healthy. My doctor has told me that she would like to see me at 135 pounds or with a waist of 33". When I was in Europe I was at my smallest size in ages, weighing 150. By my best calculations, that's 25% body fat, which is "healthy" for a woman my age. (Less than 30% is supposed to be healthy at my age, but that seems high to me.) My waist was still 35". I can't imagine losing 2" with only dropping an extra 6.6 pounds.
If I weigh what my doctor wants me to weigh, I'd be at 13% body fat. That might, however, get me to the preferred 33" waist. Might. I'm 50 years old. Under no circumstances should I be at 13% body fat. To get to that weight, I'd have to drop muscle, which seems really counter-productive.
The lesson that I've gotten from all of this is that MY BODY DOESN'T WANT ME TO BE "HEALTHY"!! :ultra:

Well, last time I went to the Kyokushin Dojo was 6 March. Been shut down since then.
We just stared the first Zoom class yesterday as a hold over till we reopen. A forty minute class destroyed me.
Good thing is, there are Kyokushin Zoom classes from all the IKO's you can drop into all over the world. Cool as shit actually and doesn't cost a thing. The class yesterday had our normal crew, folks from Colorado and a dude from the UK. Saturday one of the Shihans from Switzerland will be cohosting.
Had ambitions today to go 50-60 miles on the bike, but given I've typically only done 10-15 miles most days and only twice more than 20 miles , good sense prevailed and I did a modest 32 miles.
Still nice to stretch the legs, but that's the furthest I've been since September, due to a bad Winter and the lock-down.
So a long way to go before I can recover some of my former fitness. <_<
Six miles today, Cherry Beach return. Few about, but the wind and sail surfers were out. Beautiful to see them skittering across the lake.
Sunday should have been the MCM Historic Half, but thanks to the pandemic, it was cancelled and instead they did a virtual run where you run and upload your results in order to get your swag. I went out and did the 13.1 miles. Weather was good and my route wasn't bad - one hill at the beginning and relatively even afterwards - but I still fell just barely short of my goal: 2 hours and 5 minutes, so just over five minutes too slow. I knew it wasn't going to happen by mile 4, and I have only my lack of training to blame.
Still, it was my fastest half so far. I feel like I'm on track to at least break 5 hours in the marathon in the fall, as long as I actually put in regular miles each week.
Doing workouts with my son that he is getting from a trainer friend of his. Yesterday was doing deadlifts, lunges and pushups (amongst other things) with a .... towel. OH MY GOD it was hard. Did wind sprints at 65% to finish it off. Thankfully no towel used for that.
Towel deadlifts really punish poor form. No cheating with that :D
Yeah, I've been doing towel deadlifts too. They look like a joke but they're quite hard
There's actually a lot you can do with bodyweight/hoseware exercises. That said, I do miss lifting weights <_<
I've been riding my bike more frequently and possibly a tiny bit faster. I don't use any of these techno gadgets to measure any of the metrics involved in bike riding, preferring to just ride the bike and do it all on feel. I think I'm going a bit faster though.
I am so loving riding my bike, even in this Florida heat. I'm back at work, but only 3 or 4 days a week, so still easy to get plenty of rides in.
I do find myself completely unable to sleep after a 2 hour ride with efforts the same day though. That's a phenomenon I remember from my racing days only after the most intense competition. I am quite a bit older, and I haven't ridden much for a long time, so I think I'll just have to be patient and get fitter and It will pass.
Did a bunch of 40k walks over the last few weeks, I think I've seen every trail and field within walking distance from my home. Trains are coming back in June, not a moment too soon.

Yeah, not a moment too soon, I've really missed taking the bike on trains; but I still won't be able to use them because of my domestic situation and need to isolate them from possible contact risks I take. :(

Based on experience, you run about 5% faster in a real race given competitors/pacers/adrenaline, so you should be there man. (My race times are almost always better than my training times). Good work.
My marathoner friends say the real race starts at 30K. IT'S HARD. Good luck.

Well yeah, that is a concern. I'm thinking about taking the earliest possible train out somewhere (on the weekend, should be deserted) and then walking back.
As part of our workout yesterday, my son introduced me to tempo squats - 4 seconds down, hold for 2 seconds at the bottom, one second up - rinse and repeat mixed in with an upper body superset. By the third superset I was wiped out. Those things are hard!

That does make sense. Last year I only did a marathon, so I don't have any shorter races to compare against (well, I did a 5k, but I had a stroller and was pacing my wife, so it's not really compartive). My regular runs are already better than the 10 miler and half-marathon I did two years ago. The problem is that while competitors and the race environment is motivating, it also causes me to push myself too hard and I end up burning out around mile 18 or so.
Hopefully the MCM will go ahead in October, presumably with some social distancing restrictions. If it doesn't, I'll defer to next year rather than try to run a full marathon on my own.

As part of our workout yesterday, my son introduced me to tempo squats - 4 seconds down, hold for 2 seconds at the bottom, one second up - rinse and repeat mixed in with an upper body superset. By the third superset I was wiped out. Those things are hard!
That sounds exhausting! :showoff:
Worst year for exercise in at least five, if not a decade or two; a couple of family emergencies in summer/autumn, followed by a very wet winter and the virus dominating the Spring means, I've cycled probably about half of what I'd usually do in a year. <_<
Though I think what I've really missed during the lockdown has been using and accessing trains/other public transport.
Doing long travel days, having to run to make multiple connections, running across towns/cities to catch buses and often having to cycle to the railway station in the first place, is probably quite a good all round workout and was helping to keep the cobwebs at bay.
You could always get an exercise bike. I know it doesn't have the side benefits, but you'll still be moving your legs.
It's June and I'm at about 200 miles running so far. Unless I really start running more, I'm not going to hit 500 miles for the year.
ouch.
It's bad feeling. Two years ago I was 100 plus miles a month, now I am lucky if I hit 25.
If only I had a good desk job.
Lost 2 Kg during the lockdown. Right now I'm at my lowest bodyweight since 2017 :hmm:
Gained probably 20 lbs in the last few months. This is not good.
The clothes that I put away after losing a lot of weight are now back out,and THOSE (well some of them anyway) are feeling a bit snug.
Time to get back to it. Back on a low carb diet, and back to making it a point of walking every day.
I hate running, but a nice brisk walk with the dog is perfectly doable.
Need to lose those 20 lbs, and another 40 for good measure would be great.
60 lbs by the end of the year, should be doable. That is only 10lbs a month.

What replaces the carbs?
1. To some degree, hopefully nothing. Hence a lower calorie intake.
2. To another degree, protein and fat, at least as a ration of total caloric intake.
So here is my plan. KISS.
1. No fast food. None.
2. No eating after 8pm.
3. 10,000 steps every day. If I miss a day, have to make it up the next day. And they should be a *brisk* 10,000 steps. But not running. Because fuck that shit.
4. While I am working on getting the weight off, no more than 20-30 net carbs per day. This means (while I am working off the excess weight) no bread, no tortillas, no pasta, and no snack chips, pretzels, crackers, or anything like that.
5. No breakfast, other than a low carb protein shake.
Rather than focusing on what you are not going to eat, what are you eating - put in lots of good fats and you won't be tempted to go back to eating all that junk food and empty carbs. You will also be able to eat healthy carbs which are actually pretty important.

Fuck me that was rough
I deferred my entry in the Marine Corp Marathon to next year. :weep:
They had lowered the minimum pace time to 12 min/mile, and while my target pace is faster than that, it would also be my fastest marathon yet. Additionally, I don't see the pandemic improving by the fall, and with a newborn and a toddler, I can't risk doing the run.
I have not signed up for the virtual run, because 26.2 miles on my own is fucking crazy.
I'm really pleased I'm able to go to the gym again, even with all the restrictions they have.
It's the only thing I've really missed in the past four months (and public transport).

Good grief, surprising that an industry leader like them gets caught out.
That really sucks. :(
I've been using RunKeeper for the past six years. I think you can download a database of your runs, with the basic information in a CSV and the GPS/route info in another format. If your service allows, it would be a good idea to save your own backups, though it's too late if you're using Garmin. Hopefully they've been backing everything up and at worst you lose just your most recent activities.

Still hitting in person classes on Tuesday and Thursday 1.5 hours each for Kyokushin even though it's non contact due to WA state requirements. Its a tight crew and no new people, which is a good thing. Saturday's are strength, conditioning and flexibility for 1.5 hours on zoom.
Remained steady at 230-235 lbs.

40 minutes on the exercise bike every day. Hate it, but at my age I have to keep that heart rate up.
Popped out the other evening to do a half-dozen miles in the 85F heat, ended up doing a 40 km loop around the top end of the forest, a route I'd never done on a bike.
Had to hurry a bit as I didn't have decent lights, got home feeling really rather good, sometimes one has to push oneself a bit? :)
Lifting weights at 30ยบ with no A/C (because pandemic) = not fun. I shifted my gym schedule to the evening (less heat and less people), but I had to do a morning session today and I'm completely beaten.
I lost strength during the lockdown (unsurprisingly), but I'm inching back to my pre-pandemic shape. During the lockdown I also aggravated a shoulder injury (and doctors were not seeing anybody unless you were dying because Covid) so I'm also taking a bit slowly. I've been doing rehab for the past two months and it already feels much better, and I'm regaining strength.
Yesterday someone at work asked if I had lost weight. :)
I'd say I've got at least a further 5 kg to go, but the COVID diet seems to be working.
I got a: Peloton
I have yet to try it out yet... still wrapping up work and downloading firmware updates and shit for it.
So kids hockey started up last weekend. I'm trying to assistant coach all three boys this year - for Tim it might be the last year I'm able to just given how he's advancing - if he makes the AA team next year they have semi-pro coaches.
But anyways, so that meant 2 hours on the ice on Saturday, and 3 hours on Sunday. It's now on Tuesday and I'm still stiff and sore.

My lockdown diet is working so far - I lost 40 pounds. The next ten will be more difficult though. I've been bouncing up and down in weight a bit, because I've been eating more liberally lately.
I went back to the gym for the first time this morning. OH MY GOD have I lost a lot of strength and flexibility. Not quite starting back from square one, but awfully damn close. I hope it doesnt take the same amount of time to build back up as it did the first time, but I will not push it.

The shoulder injury that I'd been carrying since early year has healed almost completely. I was kinda worried that it was one of those "YOU'RE OLD NOW" niggling injuries that I would never get rid of, but a friend of mine gave me the contact of a physio that nailed the treatment.
My lifts are also back at pre-pandemic levels, I've also lost a bit of weight... Things are chugging along nicely on the fitness level.
I have also got used to go to the gym at late night. The gym is deserted at that time, and since not everybody has good mask discipline, it makes for better Covid safety. Now it kinda fits well with my daily rythms (I was a morning gym-goer).
The outdoor season looks to be over now, the typical cold and rainy autumn has begun.

I bought one of those massage guns to help with an achilles tendonopothy that just won't go away. Not sure how I feel about it yet.
Third session back at the gym. First bench press day - On my last day of bench press 6 months or so ago, I would warm up with 135 lbs and then move up to 225 to begin my workout. Today 135 was were I stayed....
Now entering Winter hibernation. :P
Took a swimming class. Damn swimming is hard, really hard.
Two class mates from classes 1-9 were there also, that was fun, I haven't really talked to them in 20 years or so.

Bump - thread half way down the 2nd page. :hmm:
With curfew I can no longer go to gym at nights, so now I'll try going at very early morning and check how crowded it is.
I've lost more weight and now I'm about to reach my personal "wall" (104 Kg). Every time I've tried to slim down in the past years I've never been able to get past that.
I was on the ice for all 3 kids hockey practices yesterday. 3 hours total.
Now I'm coaching, not doing the drills, and don't even work up a sweat. But skating uses such different muscles, and I am demoing a lot of drills that I was seriously stiff and sore afterwards.
I hear you. I pulled a hamstring demonstrating a sliding drill back in the little league days - lesson that the coach needs to warm up too, learned.
I'm trying to eat a bit more lately. Turns out I've lost at least 7-8 kg since lockdown started.
I could still lose a few more and it would be fine, but more than five might be trouble.

Ok, it seems that italy is on the way to another (let's hope rather short) bout of lockdown following the increasing number of Covid-19 cases; gyms are already closed, so I'm looking at making my own private gym club for all the family.
I have already access to a treadmill and a bike, and I want to add some generic items, like dumbbells and the like.
What do you suggest could be a good starting point?
I was thinking about:
Dumbbells, 2 and 5 kgs, maybe other weighs;
a Pullup bar;
A set of exercise elastic bands;
a balance board;
a bench, without rack (for the moment)
other necessary equipment?

They did. The endorphin boost was pretty substantial, the whole run was race pace. and recovery took longer than normal.
Three weeks later I think another long run would be possible. But I'm looking at a modest 10 miles, tops.
The youngest of the CC boys has become very interested in this topic as an area of research. Science is apparently waking up to all the positive benefits.
To encourage me to get some exercise of a evening, I've started making a gps map of my town and my little walks.
Down to 103 Kg, 3 Kg away from my target after losing 6 kg since January. Xmas will probably be a slight bump on the road, but it's the closest I've been to weigh under 100 kg since 2007 (when I moved to the US ). Pretty sure I'll get there sometime in 2021.
