Some people will happily tell you numbers aren't their thing or that two digit or more numbers make their head hurt.

More than two digits can be painful, but causing head pain?  :hmm:
There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Why would you quantify unquantifiables?
Because some people prefer the comfort of misleading numbers to the discomfort of subjective intangibles.

Or we can just do what I said:  quantify what's quantifiable and leave it at that.

If the purpose is to produce a list of "Top Ten Generals of All Time", I fail to see the expected value. If the purpose is to visualize information / data in a different way, why not? Instinctively, I would assume that comparing warfare before gunpowder / motorization, or in widely varying climes and circumstances (i.e., warfare in the 16th century Andes vs warfare in the 19th c. Crimea) would make little sense - but modelization can bring attention to outliers and suggest new lines of inquiry. Thus, JR's suggestion to look at contemporary alternatives to the general being assessed. Rigidity of the model (or the seduction to bring conclusions to bear on much more shady grounds) is often a problem, especially in those areas of history which appear more easily quantifiable, but then again, isn't that a problem of models in any case?

MARSE ROBERT

Lee wasn't even the best general the Confederates had.

Braxton Bragg never got the accolades he deserved.

It's remarkable to me just how poorly led the armies of the US civil war.  Professionally trained officers were in such low supply that a Custer was made a 2nd LT. in 1861 and in 1865 he was commanding an entire division as a Major General.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
