It's like they brought him from the 1930s with a time machine.

YOu pretty much have to be a time traveler from the 1930s to be a socialist in this day and age. :contract:

Yet he's the conservative candidate.  :contract:

If you were a Catalan you'd be a die-hard voter of his party no matter what.

In my younger days, probably.

Not terribly interested in independence movements now though.

Mr Torra's first name is Quim  :hmm:

I wonder if he has ever holidayed in England and wondered what all the chuckling was about?

Nobody but the English holiday in England  :(

It's actually a relatively common name down here, I guess hundreds of Catalan Quims wonder why Englishmen are so jocular while visiting London every year.

To be fair, even the English avoid holidays in England, if possible.

London is a very popular tourist destination. The rest of England... not so much.

I've spent around a month in England throughout several trips, and the only thing I've seen outside London is Stonehenge.

Well more's the pity for both of you. There are a lot of cool things to see in England and the UK.

An update.

The new Spanish president is meeting the new Catalan president next week. The Catalan president will ask for an independence referendum, the Spanish president will say no, but he's willing to discuss further devolution. I'm not really optimistic, since I don't think the separatists are looking for a compromise deal - or that they can even afford one politically. They have put themselves between a rock and a hard place, since any concession on independence would be seen as a betrayal by their incensed base. Recently the second largest separatist party tried to remove an UDI from their political platform, and faced an internal revolt from the bases.

On a side note, the arrested Catalan politicians have been moved to Catalan prisons pending trial (which will happen in the winter or early 2019). Since prisons are devolved, the Catalan government now finds itself being the jailor of people who they consider political prisoners. We had the pretty peculiar image of the entire government participating in a demo outside a prison they themselves run.

Yeah I concur. My English experiences have mostly been in London, but I've very much enjoyed the bits beyond the metropolis once I went. I'd love to spend a longer vacation in England.

I have President Putin. He just said itís not Russia. I will say this. I donít see any reason why it would be, ...So I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that president Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.

I was in Bath a couple of times within the last fortnight and I don't know, but it's really becoming a tourist magnet hell-hole, I don't think it ever has much of an off-season period nowadays?

Though still nice to cycle through or across on one's way to somewhere else; need to find PG's Solsbury Hill next time I'm passing.  :bowler:

Yeah, it is crowded, but I have a friend who lives up on the hill and it is nice to stroll in and out of town past those little locks  :)

Yes those locks are nice; borrow a bike next time and ride alone the canal to Bradford upon Avon and back one evening?

Bath? A place for tourists? Who would have even imagined such a thing? :P
