I was introduced to that adage by 1990s Canadian Reform Party leader Preston Manning, who used it repeatedly in discussing the national debt (the hole) and deficits (continuing to dig).  I never knew it had wider usage.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

I'm guessing "holes" has some meaning in French than in English?  Because, in English, the word wouldn't upset any monitors.

Why would I search images for the meaning of a word or phrase?

I showed the board the result of googling for "First Rule of Holes."  In English, there is nothing there that would offend.  Apparently, that's not true in French.
